What Counts as a Plumbing Emergency
A plumbing emergency is any problem that's causing damage right now or makes the home unsafe or unusable. If water is running where it shouldn't and you can't stop it, or wastewater is coming back up into the house, it's an emergency. An emergency plumber in Caldwell can stop the damage, make the system safe and get water and drains working again.
Common emergencies include:
- A burst or split pipe, often after a hard freeze
- Sewage backing up into a tub, shower or floor drain
- A water heater leaking from the tank itself
- No water at all to the house
- A toilet overflowing that won't stop at the shutoff
- Water coming through a ceiling or out from under a wall
If it's dripping slowly into a bucket, it can usually wait for a scheduled visit. If it's spreading, call (208) 603-5209.
First Steps: Shut Off the Water
Before anything else, stop the flow. Every minute water runs, it soaks further into subfloors, drywall and insulation.
- Close the main shutoff valve. In most Caldwell homes it's where the water line enters the house: in the crawl space, basement, garage or a utility closet. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
- Can't find it or it won't turn? The curb stop in the box near the street can shut water to the whole property, though it may need a meter key.
- Open a faucet at the lowest point in the house to drain pressure from the lines.
- Turn off the water heater if the leak is near it or the house water is off for long.
- Move valuables and electronics out of the wet area and take photos for insurance.
Burst and Frozen Pipes
Treasure Valley winters regularly bring days that never climb above freezing. Water left in pipes that run through crawl spaces, garages, attics or exterior walls can freeze, expand and split the pipe. The leak often doesn't start until the ice thaws, sometimes hours later, which is why so many burst pipes are discovered in the afternoon after a cold night.
A plumber will locate the break, repair or replace the damaged section, check nearby pipe that may also have cracked, and talk through ways to keep it from happening again. If the water has soaked floors or walls, drying should start right away. Learn more about pipe repair and repiping.
Sewage Backups
When toilets gurgle, floor drains bubble or dirty water rises in the tub when you run the washer, the main sewer line is likely blocked. Stop using water in the house right away; everything that goes down the drain has nowhere to go but back up.
Sewage is contaminated, so avoid contact, keep kids and pets out of the area, and don't try to clear a main line with a store-bought auger. A plumber can clear the line, use a camera to find out why it backed up, and recommend a repair if roots or a broken pipe are to blame. See sewer line repair and drain cleaning.
Water Heater Leaks
A small drip from the relief valve or a fitting can often be fixed. Water leaking from the bottom of the tank itself usually means the tank has rusted through, and it won't get better. Shut off the water to the heater (the cold supply valve on top), turn off the power or gas, and call. A plumber will tell you whether it's a repair or a replacement. More on water heater repair and replacement.
Smell Gas? Leave First
If you smell rotten eggs near a gas water heater, furnace or range, don't use switches, phones or flames inside. Leave the house and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Gas leaks are a safety emergency first and a plumbing job second.
Emergency Now or Next Day?
Not every plumbing problem needs someone tonight. A simple way to decide:
Call right away
- Water is spreading and won't stop at a shutoff
- Sewage is backing up into the house
- The water heater tank is leaking
- You have no water at all
- Water is coming through a ceiling or light fixture
Usually fine to schedule
- A single slow drain (with other fixtures still working)
- A dripping faucet or running toilet
- Low water pressure at one fixture
- A small, contained leak you've shut off
When you're unsure, call (208) 603-5209 and describe it.
Why Use a Licensed Plumber in an Emergency
Emergency repairs are often done fast and under pressure, which is exactly when shortcuts happen. A licensed plumber works to Idaho's plumbing code, pulls permits when a repair requires them, and carries insurance if something goes wrong. Before work starts, confirm the plumber's license on the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL) website and ask how pricing works.
Preventing the Next Emergency
- Know where your main shutoff is and make sure it turns freely.
- Insulate exposed pipes in crawl spaces, garages and exterior walls before winter.
- Disconnect hoses and cover outdoor faucets each fall.
- Keep grease, wipes and food scraps out of drains.
- Have the water heater checked if it's more than about 10 years old, older in hard-water areas.

Emergency Plumbing FAQ
What should I do first when a pipe bursts?
Shut off the main water valve, open a low faucet to drain pressure, turn off power to wet areas if it's safe to reach the panel, and call a plumber. Then take photos for insurance.
Can a frozen pipe thaw on its own?
It can, but when it does, a cracked pipe will start leaking. If a faucet stops working during a freeze, open it slightly and warm the area gently with a space heater or hair dryer, never an open flame, and watch for leaks.
Is a sewer backup dangerous?
Yes. Sewage carries bacteria and other contaminants. Stop using water, keep people and pets away, and have a plumber clear the line rather than trying it yourself.
Will homeowners insurance cover emergency plumbing damage?
Many policies cover sudden water damage, like a burst pipe, but not the repair of a worn-out part or slow, long-term leaks. Read your policy and let your insurer know as soon as you can.
Who will I be connected with?
An independent, licensed plumbing contractor who serves your area. Plumbing Caldwell is a referral service and doesn't do the work itself.
