FAQ

Plumbing Questions, Answered

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

Water that's spreading and can't be stopped at a shutoff valve, sewage backing up into the house, a water heater leaking from the tank, no water at all, or water coming through a ceiling. If you're not sure, shut off the main water valve first, then call (208) 603-5209. More on emergency plumbing.

Where is my main water shutoff?

In most Caldwell-area homes, it's where the water line enters the house: in the crawl space, basement, garage or a utility closet. There's usually a second valve in the meter box near the street, which may need a meter key. Find yours before you need it.

How long does a water heater last in the Treasure Valley?

Tank water heaters often last around 8 to 12 years. The valley's hard water shortens that by building sediment in the tank. Flushing the tank yearly and checking the anode rod helps. See water heater repair and replacement.

What are the signs of a sewer line problem?

Several slow drains at once, gurgling toilets, water backing up into a tub or floor drain, sewer odors, and soggy or sunken spots in the yard. Read the full list

How do I know if I have a hidden leak?

Turn off every fixture and watch the water meter for 30 to 60 minutes. If it moves, water is leaking somewhere. Other signs include a jump in the water bill, stains, warm spots on the floor, and the sound of running water. See leak detection.

Do plumbers need a license in Idaho?

Yes. Plumbing contractors and plumbers are licensed by the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL). You can confirm a license on the DOPL website before work starts.

How do I keep pipes from freezing?

Insulate pipes in crawl spaces, garages and exterior walls, disconnect garden hoses in the fall, keep the heat on when you're away, and let a faucet on an exterior wall drip on the coldest nights. More winter tips
